BY INVITATION ONLY! Show the National Team Coaches what you've got, and you could be one of the first students in the USATKD Poomsae Athlete Academy!

USA Taekwondo High Performance has identified high-potential poomsae athletes within the talent pool and invited them to this exclusive online Talent ID session! Join the country's leading poomsae coaches, who will put you through your paces to see if you have world class potential. Athletes who progress through this online session will progress to an exclusive, in-person Talent ID Camp, where the first Poomsae Academy Athletes will be selected through the Talent ID Program. Those athletes will subsequently be invited to regular training camps designed to help develop world class athletes, and will have the opportunity to earn a spot on the National Poomsae Team Selection Roster.

About this Course

  • USATKD Poomsae Talent ID

    Talent ID is designed to help us make informed decisions on which athletes we will invest time and money into - we do this because potential is not always fulfilled, and with the right environment the right athlete can thrive, perhaps more than a currently successful competitor. USATKD is committed to identifying and supporting as many potential world class athletes as possible.

  • Event Format

    Due to the pandemic this initial Talent ID session will take place via Zoom. As soon as it is safe to do so, we will resume in-person Talent ID sessions. Each athlete will be assessed individually, and athletes will be split into groups to work with the National Team coaches.

  • What happens next?

    All athletes will be given feedback on their performance in the session, and athletes who successfully make it through this phase will be informed of when the next phase - the Academy Selection Camp - will take place. At the Selection Camp a decision will be made on whether each athlete is invited to join the Academy and receive further opportunities to work with the National Team Coaches. If not, they will be given elements to work on before applying again. Please note, winning a Major Tournament is also a route into the Athlete Academy.

U.S. National Poomsae Team Head Coach

Dan Chuang

Coach Dan Chuang has been head coach of the USATKD National Poomsae Team since 2014, and recently led Team USA to a second place finish at the 2020 Online World Poomsae Championship. Coach Chuang has placed many personal athletes on the national poomsae team and has coached athletes to world medals. Coach Chuang has also served as head poomsae coach and president of the USA National Collegiate Taekwondo Association.

U.S. National Poomsae Team Coach

Huy Nguyen

Coach Huy Nguyen is a national poomsae team coach and is a world poomsae champion in the Under 30 Male Team division. He has produced numerous national team athletes and world medalists in both the recognized and freestyle divisions, and recently served as the head poomsae coach of the Summer World University Games in Naples, Italy.

U.S. National Poomsae Team Coach

Jung Hwan Jin

Coach Jung Hwan Jin has coached at the 2016, 2018 and 2020 World Poomsae Championships, and has earned "Best Coach" honors at the World Taekwondo President's Cup. He has placed many athletes on the national poomsae team who have gone on to medal at the World Poomsae Championships, and currently also serves as a National Poomsae Team Coach.
